This is where it all started. I wrote my first poem about a butterfly in grade six and it was published in a school magazine. If I said I continued writing steadily since then, I'd be lying. For years, I wrote nothing! It wasn't until the early 2000's that I picked up my pen and journal and started writing seriously. That decision was the beginning stages of Karlene Millwood Productions. From Jazz and Poetry showcases to theatre to film. It's been an interesting journey and yet, I'm just beginning.

Sharing two of my poems here with you. Enjoy!

Life

Life is lived forward but understood backwards

We often go through life wandering to find a resting place

A place of comfort for our souls

Soothing waters to caress away the hurts and the pain

We look for solace in the arms of men

Human beings, themselves broken

A case of the blind leading the blind

Both walking but unsure of the destination.

We never understand until we stand still and turn around

Survey the path from whence we came

Study the bumps and turns in the road and learn from our mistakes

Then look forward again and plot a new course

This time looking to the True Source

The Spring of Living Water, The Healer of hearts broken

The One who erases all life’s pain

No, we don’t really begin to understand until we are engrafted into the Divine

The Life Giver; The Source of all life.

Until we turn back to Him how dare us think we understand anything?

How can we live life without the One who gives life?

Do you not realize that our lives are intertwined?

What one does affects one thousand

It is a never ending circle

Life is useless without a purpose

Have you found yours?

Seriously, what are YOU living for?

My Heart's Desire

Like fresh dew on blades of grass in the morning

Delicate and moist to touch

To touch You would be to break you

So instead I nestle you in the centre of my palms

And breathe lovingly on you and watch you dance

A smile plays on Your lips and as it grows You disappear

Leaving my hands empty.

But now I see You in incandescent sunlight, smiling

Your warmth dances on mountain peaks

Dry desert plains cry for a canopy of protection as You move

Opening Your arms to stretch across deep valleys

Growing, expanding until You find me

And hold me within Your embrace.

Playing hide-and-seek You tease me by darting to and fro

In vibrant reds, oranges and periwinkle blue

Roses, hydrangeas and bougainvilleas are saturated with Your essence

But just when I thought I found You, You move and change

Now You are tall, strong and sturdy

A majestic, green life bearing tree.

You are as soft as the Caribbean breeze

Wafting across lush, green landscapes

I feel Your caress on my cheeks

I reach up to touch You and feel air

You are the air that I breathe

Crisp and clean that fills me up inside

And rejuvenates my being.

You are the lull of gentle waves stealthily creeping on the shore

Intimately clinging to memories in between grains of sand

And leaving glistening traces of wet kisses on my toes

You are silver moonlight mysteriously dancing across dark waters

With tiny stars twinkling in Your eyes

Silently daring me to love You.

You are the melody drifting in my mind

The song playing on my lips

Beautiful music coming from my fingertips

My thoughts paint a striking mosaic of how I see You

But wherever, whenever or however You show up

You are, and will always be, my heart’s desire.
